Blog Post #7

I learned a lot by doing the PSA assignment. I think I have the basics of editing down pretty good and I have a better eye for what fits together. I learned better how to put something together that will keep the viewers interest. Working with Alex and John helped me a lot. They were there when I was stuck on certain things or needed an opinion. The most challenging aspect of the unit was probably working and agreeing on things with my group. But we listened to each other and made final decisions together. I think our PSA could be improved by doing more research and maybe displaying more facts about the downsides of Adderall. Otherwise I think we got our project to its full potential.

I think once the PSA is completely edited it will be effective. By not making it overly dramatic it will be more believable and realistic. I don't think we'll end up using a whole lots of effects in the final. That can make things look cheesy and weird scene changing can get annoying really fast. It's going to take a lot of hours of editing to get a clean finish, but yes, I think it will be effective.

We are almost done with our draft. I'm really happy that we're ahead of the game. I am content with our draft, because it's supposed to be a rough copy of our final and that's basically what it is. The whole story is there, it just needs a little more work to be at it's full potential.

I'll write this as if I turned it in on time, because honestly I didn't. I'm sorry.
My group is doing quite well in the video production process. We were told by MTN that we were the second group to start and the group that started early had no choice really. So we're ahead of the game. We've made all deadlines and came out with an awesome story board. We still need to shoot about half of the footage, but it will be quite simple due to awesome planning. The only obstacle we've had is not being able to have the camera for very long periods of time and limited filming training.

The most challenging part of the PSA so far has probably been trying to decided the order of the shots with my group. Mapping out the story board took quite a while and then we even decided to change it once we had completed it. So we might end up making another storyboard or just adding onto the current one. Otherwise the process is going pretty well. My group works well together.

I think my group's pitch went really well both times we presented it! I think we did a really good job of planning everything out. We wrote down who was going to say what and we already had our whole storyboard down in words so we could give the class, John, and Alex a good visual as to how the PSA would turn out. Our message seemed to interest the class, most likely partly because we presented with enthusiasm. Our target audience will be made of high school and college students. I believe our PSA will appeal to them, because we are going to show a lot of daily routines and things that many students do and how Adderall affects those habits and routines.

The role of public service announcements in our media culture is to try and convince viewers to do a certain thing or help out a certain cause, not to sell a product. PSAs are usually for the better good, to pursuade viewers to stay healthy or help those in need or set good examples. I believe they are a positive role in media culture, which seems to be a bit rare.

Some of the topics that my group thought about for our PSA were sleep deprivation, drug abuse, and texting while driving. Then when it was time to decide on our topic those were too over-used or generic. So the ultimate decision was more specific; the abuse of unprescribed Adderal. My group's plan for the PSA is almost solid, because we've already worked out most of the audio, filming, and lighting details. We haven't written the story board yet, but we've decided there will be three different locations in the PSA. I think everyone in our group of 4 played an equal role in the creating the plan for our PSA. I contributed to the scene ideas, fast forwarding, the topic, and audio ideas. The PSA will be a good collaboration of all of our work.

Effective Advertising

This is a Guess by Marciano ad advertising their new spring arrivals. Sex sells. There's no doubt about it. To be honest, advertising does play a role in what I buy. If I think something looks really good on a model maybe I'll try it out. If it looks glamorous and cool my subconcious is pushing me towards making the purchase.
